I was born and raised in the lively catawampus city of Butte, Montana, which to some extent or another, because lessons learned early are longest lasting; formed much of my mind.  My family’s social life was centered on a local Lutheran church and if I had anything to say about it, it more than likely is the source for the spirituality inherent in my paintings and drawings.I live in gratitude for having had the opportunity to find my voice as a painter at Montana State University in Bozeman.  As a university teacher, with over forty years of experience, I now realize how extremely unusual it is to find one’s authentic voice.  Vietnam was an experience that provided, at a young age, the opportunity to begin thinking about the big issues surrounding life, death and morality, which have formed my point-of-view about art. Finally, everything I have done as a painter and draftsman has come about…not because I was specifically taught how to do something, but rather because I saw things that I wanted to do and eventually began to do that which resonated with me.

All of this is very simple.  There is not much to it.  But the work involved in it is really something!
