All my life I loved the west, but somehow got stuck living in the east. After growing up in the suburbs of Baltimore I went to college, taught art in public school, started a mural business, raised two great kids, but never felt I was where I belonged. So, when the opportunity presented itself I took the leap and relocated to Montana. Now my artwork is inspired by the vistas and wildlife that surround me. I get to experience nature and put what I learn onto canvas. My passion for wildlife, my love of the west, and my desire to paint are now one. Living in Montana provides me the opportunity to observe nature and abundant wildlife and my paintings are a result of this close observation. I work solely from my own sketches and photographs. Most of my reference material is shot locally and in Yellowstone National Park, never at commercial game farms. I try to show the intelligence and character of animals, not just their beauty or strength. My medium of choice is acrylic paint; it forces me to work quickly and is less toxic than oils. Texture is an important element of my work as I strive to realistically show the fluff of fur or the hardness of horn. I want my viewers to be able to “feel” my subjects with their eyes. If I can cause a viewer to pause and ponder the painting before them, I consider my work a success. It is my intent to always represent the natural world in a way that will foster awareness and respect for our environment.
My acrylic paintings are currently on exhibit in local galleries or can be viewed online at http://www.lindabarnsley.com/. I specialize in wildlife and animal paintings and currently am accepting commissions. |
