Jim was born in Stroudsburg, PA in the Pocono Mountains and developed a love of the outdoors and sensitivity to the beauties of nature. He began doing pastel landscapes while in high school. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY in 1950 he did graduate work at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. He came to Billings Montana in 1957 and commenced a career as an architect, retiring in 1989. In 1951 and ’52 he spent a year and a half, away from reality, as a dude wrangler and caretaker at Allers Boulder River Ranch south of Big Timber.Soon after arriving in Billings in 1957, Jim’s love of the outdoors drew him to the Absaroka and Beartooth mountains, Yellowstone National Park and the Tetons of Wyoming providing him with continuous inspiration. Jim finds plein-air painting to be a favored environment in which to paint but usually finished the work in his studio. Workshops and drawing classes have stimulated his artistic growth.Jim has exhibited at Custer County Art Center, Miles City, MT, Cody Country Art League, Cody, WY and Visions West in Livingston and regularly shows in Montana at the Carbon County Arts Guild in Red Lodge, The Frame Hut and Gallery and Rimrock Art and Frame and the Blain Gallery in Cooke City. He was awarded Best of Show at the Cody Country Art League’s annual juried show in 2001 and has received numerous awards at various competitions. He is a member of the Carbon County Arts Guild, the Billings Art Association and the Stillwater Society in Billings. |
